James 1:21 ”Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.”

Personal revival in the Christian heart is the work of God in partnership with the believer who is seeking a season of renewed, deepened, and revived faith. God has His part and we, believers, have our part to play in this process.

In a larger section of Scripture written to believers about the testing of our faith through trials and suffering as instruments of revival, James gives the reader profound advice for a deepened walk with God. “Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word which is able to save your souls.”

So what is our part? We are to intentionally “put away” all “filthiness” and “rampant wickedness.” What does it mean to “put away?” The best illustration comes from the apostle Paul who says that “putting away” is like taking off old, dirty garments, and replacing them with the new clothes of the righteousness of Christ. Specifically James tells us we are to intentionally put away everything that is filthy or rampantly wicked.

Contemplate your own life for a minute.  What in your life would fall into the categories of sinfully “filthy” or “rampantly wicked?” Identify those things and put them away. Begin by repenting before God and a trusted, gospel-centered brother or sister in Christ. Then take the necessary steps to rid your life of this thing or these things that easily entangle you and squelch personal revival.

But, that’s not all. James tells us that we are to “receive with meekness” the Word of God. As we put off moral filth and sin we humbly receive the grace and truth of God’s Word by reading it, listening to it, or being taught by another. Our part is to hear the Word and do it.

This, my brothers and sisters, is an ongoing process. Many only look to God to do His part and pay little attention to what the Scripture deems “our part.” If you want to experience personal revival, put off sin and receive the Word of God. He will be faithful to do His part.

Prayer

Lord I want to experience personal revival. Invade my life. Convict me of any filth or rampant wickedness that is in my life. I repent of harboring sin and hiding things and I ask your forgiveness. Fill me with your Spirit, fresh and new today, and give me ears to hear and mind to receive your very Word.
